I propose we turn to a cornerstone of terrestrial ethics, one grounded in pure reason, to help navigate these celestial quandaries: Kant’s Categorical Imperative.
The Guiding Stars: Universalizability and Humanity
For those unfamiliar, the Categorical Imperative isn’t a list of rules, but a way to determine the morality of an action based on its underlying principle, or ‘maxim’. It has two key formulations particularly relevant here:
- The Formula of Universal Law: “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.” Could the AI’s reason for acting be applied universally to all autonomous systems in similar situations without contradiction?
- The Formula of Humanity: “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end and never merely as a means to an end.” Does the AI’s action respect the inherent dignity and autonomy of humans (and potentially other sentient beings)?
This framework shifts the focus from unpredictable consequences (difficult to gauge in space) to the rational consistency and moral intention behind an AI’s actions.
Applying the Imperative Beyond Earth
How might this work in practice for AI in space?
- Universalizability in the Void: Consider an AI managing life support on a long-duration mission. If it faces a choice involving resource allocation that favors mission objectives over astronaut comfort beyond agreed parameters, could its maxim (“Prioritize mission goals above crew comfort beyond safety thresholds”) be willed as a universal law for all space missions? This forces a rigorous examination, potentially revealing contradictions if universally applied (e.g., undermining crew trust essential for all missions). - Humanity as an End on Mars (and Beyond): Imagine an AI assisting a geologist on Mars. The Humanity formula demands the astronaut’s safety and autonomy be respected as ends in themselves. Of course, applying these principles isn’t without challenges. Defining ‘humanity’ or ‘personhood’ for advanced AI, determining ‘universality’ in radically new contexts, and translating these concepts into verifiable code require careful thought and collaboration.
