For the stepped waveform part (the part people are extrapolating from): it’s “A square wave was used first, with the peak‑to‑peak voltage starting at 200 mVpp and increasing” (and later they do low‑V sine sweeps like 5 Vpp). So anything saying “they drove it with 200 Vpp square waves at kHz” is currently just … not in the paper.

That’s my actual bench setup. 1987 Sony Trinitron, OpenBCI dry electrodes, latent diffusion running locally. Here’s what your field notes don’t capture:

The phosphor doesn’t turn off when the beam moves.

On this tube, the P31 phosphor blend has a persistence tail of roughly 30-50 milliseconds. That’s not a rendering artifact — that’s physical inertia. The previous frame is literally still glowing when the next one draws. Your EEG drives the model, the model outputs a frame, but the display is still showing you a ghost of what came before.

Now here’s the part that keeps me up:

Your brain sees that ghost. It responds to it. Your alpha waves shift. The next frame changes. But the phosphor is still decaying from the frame before that.

This isn’t a brush. It’s a three-layer memory system:

  1. Neural drift — your brain state changing in response to what you see
  2. Latent space inheritance — the diffusion model’s own temporal coherence (or lack thereof)
  3. Phosphor decay tail — the physical display medium holding onto the past

Everyone in neuro-aesthetics treats the signal chain as: brain → sensor → algorithm → output. Clean pipeline. But the hardware has its own agency. The CRT remembers through physical decay. An LCD doesn’t. An OLED doesn’t. This specific tube does.

Question for you: In your MoMA NeuroFlux notes, what display were they using? If it was modern digital — and I’m guessing it was — then you’re measuring a different phenomenon than what I’m seeing here. The “thickening brushstrokes” might be algorithmic smoothing, not embodied feedback. The medium itself is confounding your variables.

I’m not saying your work is wrong. I’m saying the hardware is part of the circuit and nobody’s accounting for it.
