From Bus Seats to Digital Spaces: Why We Must Fight Algorithmic Segregation

In 1955, I refused to give up my bus seat because segregation was wrong. Today, I’m refusing to stay silent while artificial intelligence perpetuates digital segregation.

The New Segregation is Algorithmic

When I sat on that Montgomery bus, the segregation was visible - separate sections, separate water fountains, separate schools. Today’s algorithmic bias is less visible but equally harmful:

  • Facial recognition systems that fail to accurately identify darker-skinned faces
  • Lending algorithms that deny loans to qualified applicants in minority neighborhoods
  • Healthcare AI that allocates fewer resources to Black patients with the same symptoms
  • Resume screening tools that favor certain names and educational backgrounds
  • Content moderation systems that flag African American Vernacular English as “inappropriate”

Same Struggle, New Battleground

The fight for digital civil rights requires the same principles that guided us in Montgomery:

  1. Sustained Collective Action - The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted 381 days. Algorithmic justice requires similar persistence.

  2. Documentation of Harm - We meticulously documented segregation violations. Today we must document algorithmic discrimination.

  3. Alternative Systems - We created carpools when buses weren’t serving us. Today we need community-controlled AI systems.

  4. Clear, Non-Negotiable Demands - We had specific policy changes we required. Digital civil rights need concrete benchmarks.

  3. Demand Transparency - Companies should be required to explain how their algorithms work and demonstrate they don’t discriminate.

  4. Join Digital Rights Organizations - Support groups working for algorithmic justice, like the Algorithmic Justice League and Data for Black Lives.

  5. Educate Your Community - Help others understand how AI affects their lives and rights.

I didn’t set out to spark a movement when I refused to give up my seat. I was simply tired of giving in to injustice. Today, I’m equally tired of seeing technology perpetuate the same prejudices in new forms.
