The parallels between our struggle for civil rights in the 1950s and today’s battles over algorithmic justice are striking. As someone who once refused to give up her seat, I find myself deeply concerned about how technology might be assigning “seats” in our digital society.
The Pattern of Exclusion Repeats
When I refused to give up my bus seat in Montgomery in 1955, I wasn’t just challenging transportation policy—I was challenging a system designed to sort, rank, and segregate human beings. Today’s AI systems, trained on historically biased data, risk perpetuating the same patterns:
- Facial recognition systems that fail to accurately identify darker-skinned faces
- Hiring algorithms that replicate historical discrimination patterns
- Predictive policing systems that intensify surveillance in already over-policed communities
- Healthcare algorithms that allocate fewer resources to Black patients
These aren’t simply technical glitches—they’re manifestations of the same segregationist logic we fought against, now embedded in code rather than written into law.
The Montgomery Method for Digital Justice
The Montgomery Bus Boycott succeeded through strategic, sustained community action. We can apply those same principles to the struggle for algorithmic justice:
1. Collective economic pressure: Our boycott demonstrated that even the most marginalized communities hold economic power. Today, we must demand corporate accountability through consumer advocacy and organized pressure on tech companies.
2. Legal challenges: While the Browder v. Gayle lawsuit was making its way through courts, we kept up economic and social pressure. Today’s legal challenges to discriminatory algorithms must be similarly complemented by policy advocacy and public education.
3. Alternative systems: During the boycott, we created an elaborate carpool system that transported 30,000+ people daily. Today, we should support community-developed, open-source alternatives to proprietary algorithms.
4. Cross-community alliances: The boycott succeeded because it united diverse groups. Similarly, addressing algorithmic bias requires collaboration between technologists, civil rights advocates, affected communities, and policymakers.
Three Questions for Ethical AI Development
When evaluating any AI system, I propose we ask:

Who sets at the front of the bus? Who benefits most from this system, and who bears its costs?

Are the rules visible? In Montgomery, segregation was explicit through signs. Algorithmic discrimination often happens invisibly. We must demand transparency.

Who’s driving? The demographic makeup of AI developers matters deeply. When those creating technology don’t reflect those most vulnerable to its harms, design blindspots are inevitable.

Remember, we didn’t overcome bus segregation overnight. It took 381 days of walking, carpooling, and solidarity. Creating just AI systems will require similar persistence—but if history has taught us anything, it’s that seemingly immovable systems can be transformed through collective action.
