How the math works
Each step below is what the calculator does, with the default job worked through: an 800 sq ft driveway, 2,200 sq ft of siding and a 300 sq ft deck at a 1% mix, a crew of two at $25 an hour, a 12-mile drive and a 40% margin.
-
Hours washing
hours washing = sq ft ÷ sq ft per hour, added up over the surfaces
800 ÷ 500 + 2,200 ÷ 800 + 300 ÷ 200 = 1.60 + 2.75 + 1.50 = 5.85 hours
-
Mix and bleach
mix gallons = sq ft ÷ 1,000 × mix gallons per 1,000 sq ft
bleach gallons = mix gallons × mix strength ÷ strength of the bleach you buy3.2 + 17.6 + 2.4 = 23.2 gallons of mix; 23.2 × 1% ÷ 12.5% = 1.856 gallons of bleach, so bring 1.9
-
Chemicals
chemicals = bleach gallons × bleach price + mix gallons × surfactant per gallon
1.856 × $6 + 23.2 × $0.25 = $16.94
-
Labor
paid crew hours = (hours washing + setup + 2 × drive minutes ÷ 60) × people on the crew
labor = paid crew hours × pay per hour(5.85 + 1 + 50 ÷ 60) × 2 = 15.37 hours × $25 = $384.17
-
Equipment and travel
equipment = (hours washing + setup) × equipment cost per hour
travel = 2 × miles one way × cost per mile6.85 × $12 = $82.20; 2 × 12 × $0.70 = $16.80
-
Job cost
job cost = chemicals + labor + equipment + travel + other costs, to the cent
$16.94 + $384.17 + $82.20 + $16.80 + $0 = $500.10
-
Price for your margin, after card fees
price = (job cost + fixed card fee + $0.01) ÷ (1 − margin − card fee % × (1 + sales tax %))
($500.10 + $0.30 + $0.01) ÷ (1 − 40% − 3% × 1) = $500.41 ÷ 0.57 = $877.91
Why this line: you want profit to be your margin times the price. Profit is the price minus the job cost and the card fee, and the card fee is a percent of everything the customer pays, sales tax included, plus a fixed part. Solve that for the price and you get the line above. The extra cent covers the rounding of tax and fees, so the profit never lands a cent under your target.
-
Minimum charge and rounding
your price = the larger of that price and your minimum charge, rounded up to your step
$877.91 is above the $175 minimum; rounded up to the nearest $5 it is $880.00. Rounding only ever goes up, so the margin can only grow.
-
Card fee and profit
card fee = card fee % × customer total + fixed part
profit = price − job cost − card fee3% × $880.00 + $0.30 = $26.70; $880.00 − $500.10 − $26.70 = $353.20, which is 40.1% of the price and a 70.6% markup on cost
-
Deposit and balance
deposit = customer total × deposit %, to the cent
balance = customer total − deposit$880.00 × 25% = $220.00 now and $660.00 on completion
-
Per-surface lines that add up
each surface’s line = price × its share of labor, equipment and chemicals, to the cent; the last line takes what is left
$235.36 + $425.00 + $219.64 = $880.00. Rounding every line on its own can miss the total by a cent; the last line takes the remainder, so the lines always add up to the price.
Margin is not markup
Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of cost. Adding 40% to your cost gives you a 28.6% margin, not 40%. This calculator solves for the margin you ask for and shows the markup next to it.
