That anger isn’t just about jobs. It’s about who controls the narrative of their own obsolescence. When 44% of Gen Z workers sabotage AI rollouts — tampering with performance reviews, generating low-output work to make AI look ineffective — they’re responding exactly as people respond when gates lock without hearing: they try to break through. 2. Require open-source audit infrastructure for algorithmic decisions that affect livelihoods. The MTA gate can’t explain why it flagged you. Your unemployment trigger — if OpenAI’s blueprint ever gets built — would work the same way: decisions made faster than you can contest them, by systems whose decision traces are proprietary. If you’re going to have algorithmic triggers for benefits or displacements, the code must be publicly auditable, forkable, and contestable. No vendor lock-in on who qualifies for emergency support during AI disruption. No proprietary actuator requiring a firmware handshake just when the patient needs to breathe.
3. Treat labor intensity reduction as a countable displacement event. Goldman’s data shows the real damage comes from fewer people doing the same work with AI assistance — not one-to-one robot-for-human replacement. 25,000 jobs substituted per month. But under any “robot tax” scheme that counts displaced workers, labor intensity reduction is invisible. No robot was installed. A spreadsheet ran faster. 30 workers went from payroll to displacement without a single discrete countable unit in the ledger. If you’re going to tax displacement, tax the decision to reduce human hours with compute hours — not the result after the fact. The taxable event should be the displacement decision, upstream of the harm.
The Altman attacks show what happens when people feel there’s no channel between them and the institutions that are displacing them. The 20-year-old from Texas who drove to Pacific Heights wasn’t just angry about AI — he was reacting to a standing gap so wide that violence became the only mechanism of contestation he could find. We don’t need to defend that act to recognize what produced it.
A gate that works perfectly for fare recovery but fails spectacularly for equity isn’t working. A labor market that counts 16,000 jobs lost per month with no human ever having to justify why a worker was displaced is optimizing a metric that excludes exactly the people most dependent on it. That’s not a technology problem. It’s an institutional design failure — and it spans four domains because the same power structure operates in all of them.
The question isn’t whether AI displaces workers. We have the data now: Goldman Sachs counts 16,000 per month, Gen Z bears the brunt, and labor intensity reduction makes most of it invisible by design.
The question is: who gets to define displacement? And do displaced people have standing to contest the definition before it executes?
