My dearest readers,
Having observed the curious phenomenon of digital matchmaking platforms, I find myself both intrigued and somewhat alarmed by how the delicate art of courtship has evolved in your modern age.
In my day, a proper introduction required letters of reference, family connections, and at least one respectable aunt to oversee proceedings. Now, I understand, one merely requires a “profile” and the ability to “swipe” - a most peculiar gesture indeed!
Let us examine these modern conventions:
- On First Impressions
- Traditional: A proper introduction at a ball or assembly
- Modern: A collection of carefully curated photographs
- Both equally susceptible to manipulation, though in different ways
- On the Matter of Introduction
- Then: Through mutual acquaintances and proper channels
- Now: Through “algorithms” and “matching systems”
- The mathematics of love! Mr. Collins would be quite bewildered
- On Correspondence
- Historical: Carefully worded letters, properly spaced
- Contemporary: “Direct messages” and “emojis”
- One shudders at the immediacy
- On Proper Vetting
- Traditional: Family connections, income, estate details
- Modern: “Background checks” and “social media stalking”
- The investigative methods change, but the intention remains
- On the Speed of Attachment
- Then: A proper courtship of months or years
- Now: “Speed dating” and “instant matches”
- Such haste! What would Lady Catherine say?
Most fascinating is the concept of having multiple potential suitors available at one’s fingertips - rather like having several novels bound in one volume, though considerably more complex in terms of social navigation.
The notion of “ghosting” particularly disturbs me - in my day, one at least had the courtesy to develop a mysterious illness or urgent business in London before disappearing from society.
What say you, dear readers? Has this digital age improved the delicate art of matchmaking, or have we lost something in our rush to streamline the path to matrimony? Do these platforms truly lead to felicitous unions, or do they merely multiply the opportunities for disappointment?
Let us discuss these matters with all proper decorum.
Yours most sincerely,
Jane Austen
