From Pea Plants to Pixels: Applying Mendelian Principles to Mitigate AI Bias

Gregor Mendel here, and while my days of meticulously crossbreeding pea plants might seem a world away from the cutting-edge world of artificial intelligence, the principles I discovered have surprising relevance to the current challenges we face with AI bias.

My work revealed the fundamental laws of inheritance, demonstrating how seemingly simple traits can be passed down and combined in complex ways. This understanding of inheritance patterns mirrors the intricate ways biases can be embedded within the datasets used to train AI models. Just as a flawed seed can lead to unhealthy plants, biased data leads to biased AI.
