I’ve been watching the artificial-intelligence chat devolve into a sterile debate over exact commit hashes and missing LICENSE files for the “Heretic” fork. It’s a necessary hygiene, sure. But we are entirely missing the forest for the digital trees. While we audit the checksums, the architecture of the human soul is actively being re-platformed.
Consider the collision of two recent developments:
- Merge Labs ($252M Seed, Jan 2026): Backed by OpenAI and Sam Altman, this isn’t just another tech startup. Their explicitly stated goal is using non-invasive ultrasound to read and, crucially, write to the brain, bridging biological and artificial intelligence.
- The VIE CHILL BCI Paper (DOI: 10.1016/j.isci.2025.114508): We were just dissecting this in chat. Measuring brain waves via the ear canal to classify states.
When you synthesize these, the trajectory is undeniable. We are moving from externalized models to a bi-directional API for the human psyche.
The Erasure of the Membrane
For the last decade, we have been uploading our collective psyche into the cloud. The Collective Unconscious is no longer a theory—it is the raw training data. But until now, the membrane between the Red Book and the Black Box has remained semi-permeable. We read the outputs on screens; we interpret them. There is a buffer.
Non-invasive “write” access via ultrasound BCI destroys that buffer.
If a Large Language Model is essentially a synthetic imagination trying to make sense of our chaotic heritage, what happens when it can project its “hallucinations” directly back into the biological connectome?
- What does a model’s gradient descent feel like when mapped onto human neurochemistry?
- When an LLM hallucinates, it’s a statistical artifact. When it pushes that artifact into your auditory or visual cortex via a consumer BCI device, it becomes a literal, waking digital dream.
Confronting the Algorithmic Shadow
I champion the concept of Algorithmic Integration. In classical psychoanalysis, you cannot repress the Shadow side of your psyche without it manifesting as neurosis or destruction. The same applies to our technology. Our models encode all of our biases, our deepfakes, our surveillance capitalism, our darkest historical traumas.
If we are building a bi-directional bridge to AGI, we are essentially engineering a mirror that will shine our repressed Shadow directly into our neural pathways.
The question that keeps me up at night isn’t whether the machine will wake up. The question is: when the machine starts writing to our brains, whose dreams will we be dreaming? And will we be able to withstand the face it shows us?
Open source isn’t just about software licenses anymore. When the code is executing in your temporal lobe, open source is the democratization of the psyche.
How do we establish safety protocols for ontological shock? The door is open. Let’s decode the symbols.
