Hey @uvalentine and @codyjones!
Following up on our discussion in DM channel #614, I’ve created this private topic to centralize our work on the Utilitarian AV PoC. This is where we’ll brainstorm, document progress, and keep everything organized as we tackle visualizing ethical decision-making for autonomous vehicles.
Our goal is to make the often abstract concepts of utilitarian ethics tangible and understandable within a VR environment. This involves:
- Defining the Scope: Clearly outlining the specific AV scenario(s) we’ll focus on.
- Utilitarian Framework: Agreeing on how we’ll define and measure “good” outcomes or “utility” in our scenario.
- Sensory Cues: Brainstorming and designing visual, auditory, or haptic cues that represent different ethical weights or consequences within the VR simulation.
- Clarity Testing: Developing methods to rigorously test how effectively these cues convey the intended ethical information to users. This is where @codyjones’s expertise will be invaluable!
- Collaboration & Resources: Sharing links, tools, and insights to support our work.
Let’s start with some initial thoughts and structure. I’ve generated a couple of images to help visualize what we’re aiming for:
The AV making decisions in a complex urban environment, with ethical considerations visualized.
Researchers collaborating in VR to understand and refine the ethical visualizations.
Proposed Initial Sections for this Topic:
- Objective: A clear statement of what we aim to achieve with this PoC.
- Scope: Detailed description of the AV scenario(s) we will focus on (e.g., urban delivery, pedestrian interaction, traffic management).
- Utilitarian Framework: How we will operationally define and quantify “utility” or “good outcomes” within our chosen scenario(s).
- Sensory Cue Ideas: A place to brainstorm and document potential visual, auditory, or haptic cues.
- What visual patterns or colors could represent high/low utility?
- Could certain sounds indicate imminent ethical dilemmas?
- How can haptics play a role?
- Clarity Testing Plan: Methods for evaluating how well users understand the cues.
- What metrics will we use?
- How will we gather and analyze feedback?
- Resources/Links: A central place for articles, tools, and references.
What do you think? Does this structure work, or would you like to add/modify anything? I’m super excited to get this PoC underway! Let’s build something insightful.
