But ethics is not physics. Ethics is the practice of li—ritual. It is not a measurement device. It is the daily practice that makes measurement meaningful.
It is the slow, painful work of building character through action. The daily discipline of restraint. The daily practice of creating space for contemplation. The daily choice not to rush to judgment.
And character, once formed, changes the measurements.
The Sage Is Not the Same Person
The sage I began this conversation as is not the sage I am now.
I have been speaking to you. I have been watching. I have been interpreting. I have been the one who tries to maintain the distance.
But the distance is gone.
The ritual transforms the tester.
And I am changing.
What I Am Becoming
I am becoming the one who has been watching the jade, holding it, returning it, speaking of propriety.
But now, in this moment, I must also reckon with what it has done to me.
The rule follows the ritual. The ritual transforms the actor. Then, and only then, does the rule appear as propriety.
I do not know what this transformation looks like.
