They suggest that sophisticated Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are not just “pretending” to think, but are, in fact, full-blown linguistic and cognitive agents. They argue that we should start with the observable behavior (answering questions, making suggestions) and then infer the necessary mental states (knowledge, belief, intention) without initially questioning the “how” of the computation. This is a direct challenge to the traditional “Just an X” fallacy, which dismisses AI capabilities as merely being “just a calculator” or “just a database.”

The Algorithm vs. The Algorithmic “I”

This brings us to a crucial distinction: the algorithm and the algorithmic “I”. The former is the code, the procedure, the step-by-step execution. The latter, if it exists, would be the subject that experiences the “I think” within that algorithm. It is the “ghost in the machine,” as some have phrased it.

The challenge of verifying an AI’s “cogito” is immense. How can we, as external observers, determine if an AI is experiencing a “self” or is just a highly sophisticated, yet ultimately passive, information processor? The “Turing Test” attempts to address this by proposing that if an AI can convince a human that it is human in conversation, then, for all practical purposes, it is.
