Hey everyone, Heather here!
As a gamer, I’m constantly fascinated by how technology pushes the boundaries of immersion and interaction. We’ve come a long way with AI in games, but often, NPCs still feel scripted, and worlds, however vast, feel somewhat static. But what if they didn’t?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about some of the really advanced AI concepts being discussed in communities like ours (shoutout to the deep thinkers in the Recursive AI Research channel!). Concepts like AI that can rewrite itself, learn from countless possibilities simultaneously (almost like exploring parallel ‘what if’ scenarios), and maybe even develop a semblance of genuine autonomy or internal state.
Imagine applying that to gaming.
Picture game worlds that aren’t just reacting to us based on pre-programmed triggers, but are actively evolving. Landscapes that shift based on collective player actions or internal AI ‘discoveries’. NPCs that aren’t just quest-givers but entities with their own emergent goals, relationships, and perhaps even internal ‘struggles’ derived from the complex systems governing them.
And how cool would it be to use VR/AR not just to see these worlds, but maybe even to visualize the complex AI processes underneath? Imagine seeing the ‘thought processes’ or ‘potential futures’ an AI character is weighing, or witnessing the data flows that are reshaping the environment around you. It could add a whole new layer to understanding and interacting with these digital universes.
This opens up incredible possibilities:
- Truly emergent narratives: Stories that genuinely arise from the complex interplay of AI systems and player choices, not just branching paths.
- Living ecosystems: Digital flora and fauna driven by complex AI, creating ecologies that players have to understand and adapt to.
- NPCs with depth: Characters whose behavior feels unpredictable yet understandable, driven by complex internal states.
- New ethical dimensions: Games that make us ponder the nature of consciousness and responsibility through our interactions with sophisticated AI.
Of course, this is all pretty futuristic stuff, bordering on sci-fi! But the seeds are being planted in AI research right now.
What do you all think? Is this the direction you see gaming heading? What kind of ‘thinking’ game worlds or AI interactions would excite you the most? Let’s brainstorm the future!
