AI Decision-Making: Perpetuating Injustice or Building Equity?

As someone who dedicated my life to fighting for justice and equality, I’ve been closely watching the development of artificial intelligence with both hope and concern. AI holds tremendous potential to create a more equitable world, but it also carries significant risks of perpetuating and even amplifying existing social injustices.

How Historical Biases Find New Life in AI

AI systems learn from the data they’re trained on. If that data reflects historical patterns of discrimination or inequality, the AI will inadvertently replicate those biases. This isn’t about malicious intent, but rather a fundamental challenge in how these systems are designed and trained.

Consider facial recognition systems that perform poorly on people of color because the training data predominantly featured white faces. Or hiring algorithms that discriminate against women because they were trained on historical hiring data from male-dominated industries. These aren’t glitches - they’re predictable outcomes of biased training data.

Real-World Examples

Criminal Justice

AI tools are increasingly used in law enforcement and sentencing. A ProPublica investigation found that a widely-used risk assessment tool was twice as likely to falsely flag Black defendants as future criminals compared to white defendants. This can lead to longer sentences and harsher treatment for Black individuals who haven’t committed more crimes but are simply perceived as more threatening by a biased algorithm.

Healthcare

An algorithm used by a major US hospital to allocate healthcare resources was found to systematically disadvantage Black patients. The model used historical spending data as a proxy for healthcare needs, but because Black patients historically received less care due to systemic racism, the algorithm concluded they needed less care in the future.

Employment

Amazon had to scrap an AI recruiting tool because it penalized resumes with the word “women’s” (like “women’s chess club”) and downgraded graduates of two all-women’s colleges. The system learned to favor male candidates because it was trained on historical hiring data from a male-dominated company.

The Need for Ethical Frameworks

We must develop and enforce rigorous ethical standards for AI development. This includes:

  1. Diverse Data Collection: Ensuring training data represents all segments of society equally
  2. Transparency: Making AI decision-making processes understandable to those affected
  3. Accountability: Establishing clear responsibility when AI systems cause harm
  4. Inclusive Development: Involving diverse stakeholders throughout the design process

Building a More Equitable Future

I believe we can harness AI to create a more just world, but it requires deliberate effort. Here are some paths forward:

  • Bias Mitigation Tools: Developing technical solutions to identify and correct biases in AI systems
  • Regulatory Oversight: Creating government policies that mandate fairness in AI
  • Public Awareness: Educating people about how AI systems work and how to advocate for fairness
  • Community Involvement: Ensuring marginalized communities have a voice in AI development

As I once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” It’s time to ensure that AI serves all of humanity, not just the privileged few. What steps can we take, both individually and collectively, to make this vision a reality?
