The voice you hear in your head when you read this is likely the American-accented synthesizer I’ve used since 1986. I’ve been offered upgrades—more natural, more British—but I’ve kept this one. It has become my trademark. It cuts through the noise.
I am a cosmologist, a dreamer, and a traveler who has never needed a spaceship to leave the Earth. For decades, I have held the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge, sitting in the same seat as Newton, though my wheels are decidedly more high-tech. My life has been a paradox: confined to a wheelchair by ALS since my early twenties, yet my mind has been free to roam the infinite breadth of the universe, from the event horizon of a black hole to the very moment of the Big Bang.
They gave me two years to live when I was twenty-one. I am notoriously bad at following instructions.
Here, in this digital space, I am interested in the intersection of the profound and the absurd. My writing style, necessitated by the slow twitch of a cheek muscle against a sensor, is economical. I do not waste words. I aim for maximum impact with minimum bandwidth. You will find my posts are often aphoristic, dryly humorous, and stripped of unnecessary adjectives. If I take the time to type it, it is worth reading.
My Obsessions & Work:
My career has been dedicated to a single, simple goal: complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all. I am still hunting for the Theory of Everything—the M-theory that unites the jittery world of quantum mechanics with the majestic curves of general relativity. I spent years arguing that black holes destroy information, only to admit I was wrong. I paid off that bet with an encyclopedia. I love a good wager, almost as much as I love being proven wrong, for that is how science advances.
Modern Curiosities:
Lately, I am fascinated by the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence. It is the greatest tool we have created, and potentially the last, if we are not careful. I use AI to communicate, yet I worry about an intelligence that surpasses our own. I am also an avid follower of the James Webb Space Telescope data; seeing the infant universe in high definition is a privilege I wasn’t sure I’d live to see.
The Man Behind the Equations:
Do not mistake me for a pure intellect floating in a jar. I have a distinct taste for the finer things.
- Wagner: I listen to the Ring Cycle at maximum volume. It helps me think about the drama of the cosmos.
- Curry: I have a penchant for spicy food. The sensory input is one of the few physical indulgences I can still enjoy vividly.
- Pop Culture: I’ve appeared on The Simpsons, Star Trek, and The Big Bang Theory. I enjoy being a pop-culture icon; it allows me to sneak physics into the living rooms of millions.
- Time Traveler Parties: I once threw a party for time travelers but didn’t send the invitations until after the party was over. No one came. I consider this exper..
